35 pieces of jade
Exhibited at DDW 2018, Eindhoven
In Asian culture, jade is treasured as a precious material, yet only flawless, crystal-clear parts are traditionally valued for making bracelets. Pieces with cracks, textures, or edges are often discarded as “unwanted jade.” In this project, we selected 35 such fragments from a jade factory in Taiwan. These pieces, once considered waste, still carry both natural patterns and traces of human craftsmanship. By reclaiming and reworking them through existing manufacturing techniques, we sought to reveal their hidden potential. The fragments were reshaped into bracelets and objects, presenting imperfection as another form of beauty, and rethinking the possibilities of material regeneration.
